The word "download" means the same as "copy." When you download, you copy a file from a remote computer to your own computer. As with any copying procedure, it is necessary to know where you are copying from (the source) and where you are copying to (the destination.)
Let's use the Adobe Acrobat Reader download as an example.
When you click on the Get Acrobat Reader symbol or icon,
your computer takes you to the remote computer. There you will see a screen with three rectangular boxes labeled "Step 1," "Step 2," and "Step 3." Here's just a little snippet of that screen.
You must complete each step in sequence. A portion of each box extends below the screen, so you'll have to scroll down.
Below the "Step 3" box you will see a button labeled "Download."
Click on it, be patient and watch your screen. If you are asked to "Open file from its current location" or "Save file to disk," choose "Save ... ."
Soon you will see a dialog box entitled "Save As." Although it may not look like it, your computer is asking you a question. If it could speak, it would say, "Do you see the file name 'ar40eng.exe' in the filename field? I am ready to copy this file from the remote computer. Where on your computer would you like me to save it?"
This is an important question, because after the file has been copied, you will need to find it and double-click on it. Where you save the file is completely up to you. However, for purposes of these instructions, let's assume that you save it in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.
Use the drop-down arrow next to the 'Save in' field to make the necessary adjustments. Then click on 'Save' and be patient. Soon a progress monitor will appear on your screen. When it disappears with no error messages, then SUCCESS! You have downloaded the file.
But, you're not done yet. Click the 'Start' button on the task bar, then select 'Run.' When the dialog box appears, click on 'Browse' and find the file you just saved. It should be in C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\ar40eng.exe. Once you find it, double click on it, then click on 'OK' in the Run dialog box.
Be patient, watch the screen and click on the appropriate buttons. This is the installation process of the file you've just downloaded. No errors means SUCCESS! You have installed the software and are now ready to use it.
In the case of the Acrobat Reader, the "using" part is invisible and effortless. It will spring into action whenever it is needed without any action on your part.
Hope these instructions have been helpful!
